2004 Season

Week 9- August 14

August 14                                                  Maritime Bowl III

Moncton Marshals 30 Halifax Shockers 3

The Shockers took the opening kickoff and marched the ball to the Marshal's 20 yard line before settling for a 20 yard field goal by Dominico Bartolocci. The defences would dominate the remainder of the first quarter as neither team was able to move the ball.
Early in the second quarter the Marshals were able to move the ball down to the Halifax 20 yard line. From there two touchdown passes in the end zone were dropped by the receivers and  Moncton was forced to settle for a 20 yard field goal by Pat Blagrave to knot the score at 3-3.
Once again the defences dominated and the teams exchanged several punts until little over two minutes remained in the half. Halifax had the ball at midfield and tried to run a fake punt on fourth down. The snap was fumbled and Moncton took possession just inside Halifax territory. Moncton was unable to move the ball once again. A 45 yard field goal attempt by Blagrave was short.
Halifax began scrimmage from their 10 yard line and could not generate a first down. They punted from their end zone. Steve Cormier returned the ball the the Halifax 25 yard line. From there two runs by Alex Best put the ball on the Halifax one yard line. J.R. Gallant plunged in from there. Blagrave added the convert to give Moncton a 10-3 lead at the half.
The Marshals took the opening kickoff at their own 18 yard line and proceeded to march downfield on the running of Best and the passing of Gallant. J.R. Gallant found Mike Allen on a 25 yard pass for the TD. The snap on the convert was bobbled leaving the score 16-3.
On the ensuing kickoff Pat Blagrave tapped the ball ahead 10 yards and recovered it giving the Marshals the ball on the Shocker 50 yard line. Moncton wasted no time moving the ball deep into Halifax territory. Gallant found Mike Cochran on a 25 yard touchdown pass. Blagrave added the convert to stretch the Marshals lead to 23-3.
The Marshals defence continued to limit the Shockers offence to minimal yardage for the remainder of the game. The Moncton offence would strike one more time in the fourth quarter. Beginning from their 35 yard line Gallant moved them downfield using mainly the pass. He found Kelly Nichols alone in the end zone from 10 yards out for the final touchdown of the game. Blagrave added the convert to complete a 30-3 victory that gave the Marshals their first ever Maritime Championship.

August 7                              New Brunswick Senior Football League Final

Moncton Marshals 29 Saint John Wanderers 27

The Wanderers took the opening kickoff and drove deep into Marshals territory only to have Matt Cormier pick off a John Hachey pass on the ten yard line. Moncton drove the ball to midfield where they were called for illegal procedure on a fourth and one and had to punt. On the first play from scrimmage Mike Thomas swept right and ran 55 yards to put Saint John ahead. Jeff Gillies added the convert.
Early in the second quarter the Marshals responded with a long drive keyed by the inside and outside running of Steve Cormier. Cormier bounced an off tackle run outside and rambled 30 yards for the TD. Pat Blagrave's convert knotted the score at 7-7.
The Wanderers went three and out on their next possession and were forced to punt into a stiff wind. Moncton took the ball at midfield and again keyed by the running of Steve Cormier, moved deep into the Saint John end where Cormier would score from one yard out. With Blagrave's convert the Marshals lead 14-7.
Again the Wanderers were unable to move the ball after the kickoff and were forced to punt. This time the Wanderers defence held and the Marshals were forced to try a 45 yard field goal. Blagrave's attempt was wide and bounced out of the end zone for a single point to make it 15-7 for Moncton.
The Wanderers took the ball on the 35 yard line and were able to get a first down. With only ten seconds left in the half Mike Thomas swept right and found Jeff Gillies open deep in the Marshals secondary. From there Gillies weaved back and forth avoiding the pursuing Moncton defenders and went all the way for the TD. Saint John's attempt at a two point conversion was no good leaving the score 15-13 for Moncton at the half.
Moncton opened the half with what looked to be a perfectly executed short kickoff that gave them possession of the ball. However one of their players were offside and they were forced to rekick. The Wanderers went to work and put together a drive of their own keyed by the short passes of QB John Hachey. Marcus Fitzgerald banged into the end zone from three yards out and Gillies added the convert to put Saint John ahead 20-15.
The Marshals were unable to move the ball after the subsequent kickoff and had to punt. Saint John was able to make yards on their next possession but ran into problems with repeated holding penalties and had to punt.
On their first possession of the fourth quarter Moncton also was unable to get a first down and had to punt. Marcus Whittingham returned the ball to midfield for the Wanderers. From there they drove to the Marshals 25 yard line only to fumble. It would prove to be a very costly fumble. Moncton took possesion of the ball and proceeded to drive down the field and score on a 5 yard run by Steve Cormier. A two point conversion attempt failed. Moncton now lead 21-20 with two minutes remaining in the game.
Jon Bailey returned the subsequent kickoff to midfield. From there Hachey mixed short passes with runs by himself and suddenly the Wanderers were on the Marshals 20 yard line with a minute remaining. Hachey would run for the touchdown from 8 yards out. Gillies added the convert and the Wanderers lead 27-21 with 41 seconds showing on the game clock.
After the kickoff Moncton started to scrimmage from their 30 yard line. J.R. Gallant threw two long incomplete passes on the first two plays. Then on third down he found Cormier open 40 yards down field. From there he raced another 30 yards for the decisive touchdown. Blagrave's convert made it 28-27 for Moncton with only 9 seconds left in the game.
Blagrave's kickoff sailed through the end zone for another point to make it 29-27. Saint John took the ball at their 35 yard line and were able to complete a couple of passes before fumbling. Moncton  was able to run out the clock and claim their first ever Burchill Trophy.

Moncton answered back when Steve Cormier went 45 yards across the field and down the sideline for six points. Chris Sparks added the convert to put the Marshals ahead 7-6 after one quarter.
Marshals took the lead in the second quarter on Shawn Wareham's two yard run. Sparks added the convert to make the score 14-7. On their next possession, the Gladiators, deep in their own end and going into a strong wind, conceded a safety to make it 16-7.       The Gladiators got a TD of their own when Sacobie connected with Jay Thomas from five yards out to narrow the score to 23-12. Capital Area would concede one more safety to make the halftime score 25-12.
The Gladiators recovered the second half kickoff and had a golden opportunity to narrow the Moncton lead. However the Marshals defence held and Capital Area came away empty. The only scoring in the third quarter was a Moncton single off a punt to make the lead 26-12.
Moncton stretched their lead to 33-12 in the fourth on Bob Giffard's 3 yard run and Sparks' convert. Capital Area answered back with Josh Sacobie finding Willy Best on a 40 yard touchdown pass. Jeff Taylor added the convert to make the score 33-19.

In the second quarter Shockers pivot Chris Livingstone connected with Todd Georgiannis on a 60 yard pass play that set the Shockers up deep in Gladiator territory.      Halifax Shockers 23 Dartmouth Knights 22

The Knights started off the game with the ball against the Shockers D.  And initially were unsuccessful.  After a long Punt by Roy Snook, putting the Shockers deep in their zone, it took some time for the Knights young defense to stand up.  The Shockers offence drove the ball into Knights territory and Dominico Bartolocci kicked a 35 yard Field Goal.
Later in the 1st quarter on a fumbled snap QB Chris Livingston recovered the ball, and dumped a pass to WR Mike Kennedy who picked up some solid blocks, and ran in for a 50 yard TD. PAT converted by Dominico B.
In the 2nd quarter the Knights began to put some pressure on the Shockers D as QB Daniel Williams hooked up several time to WR Bruce Armstrong, leading to a 40-yard TD pass.  Roy Snook converted The PAT. Leaving it 10-7 at the half with the Shockers up.
In the 3rd quarter, the Shockers defence was holding strong, forcing the Knights to punt.  Capitalizing on his high punt, Snook raced downfield to recover his own punt in front of a young return man.  Snook then ran the ball 25 yards for the touchdown, and then kicked the convert.  Despite the confusion with flags flying everywhere the play stood.  Knights 14, Shockers 10.  In the dying minutes of the 3rd, Todd Georgiannis found the end-zone with a 1-yard plunge.  Dominico Bartolocci missed the point after attempt.  Shockers 16-Knights 14.
With 1:30 left in the game QB Chris Livingston, took advantage of a tired Knights defence, and dove into the end zone on a QB sneak. PAT converted by Dominico Bartolocci. Shockers 23 Knights 14.

Then on a 2-point attempt, RB Ryan Moxsom plowed in head first for the 2 pt convert.  In a final attempt at victory the Knights tried an unsuccessful onside kick.

The Gladiators answered immediately when Jon Roscoe returned the ensuing kickoff 70 yards for the major. Danny Gibson added the convert to knot the score at 7-7.
After the kickoff Saint John drove 50 yards only to be stopped by a Gladiators goal line stand. Neither team was able to score in the second quarter.
Capital Area took the second half kickoff and put together a 60 yard drive that ended with a one yard plunge by Allison Brooks for the touchdown. Danny Gibson booted the convert to put the Gladiators up 14-7 going into the fourth quarter.
Capital Area had another long drive in the fourth quarter that stalled on the Wanderers 10 yard line. They would settle for a Danny Gibson field goal and a 17-7 lead with three minutes to play.
The Wanderers answered back with a drive of their own and a 30 yard touchdown pass from Richard Naves to Doug McPhee. A two point conversion attempt was unsuccessful.

August 3                                                        Maritime Bowl I

Halifax Subways 21 Saint John Wanderers 19

The first Maritime Bowl Game was a hard fought battle between two evenly matched teams.
The Wanderers took the opening kickoff and concluded a seven minute drive with Richard Naves 20 yard touchdown pass to Doug McPhee. The convert attempt failed.
Halifax would answer back with a long drive of their own that ended with Trevor Slaunwhite's 25 yard touchdown pass to Travis Lobban. Dave Foyers would add the convert to put the Subways up 7-6.
In the final minute of the first quarter Jon Haines broke loose on an 80 yard touchdown romp to put Saint John back in the lead 12-7. A two point conversion attempt was no good.
Once again the Subways put together a drive that ended with Chris Livingstone's 5 yard touchdown pass to Dave Foyers. Foyers would add the convert as Halifax regained the lead 14-12.
The see-saw battle continued as on their next possession the Wanderers put together another drive that lead to a 30 yard touchdown pass from Richard Naves to Jeff Thomas. This time the convert was good and Saint John took a 19-14 lead into the halftime break.
In the third quarter Halifax drove all the way to the Saint John 15 yard line where the Wanderers Clifton Richards' interception got the ball back for Saint John. However, on the second play from scrimmage the Wanderers fumbled the ball back to Halifax. This time Alan Wetmore went in from the five yard line and Dave Foyers once again converted to give the Subways a 21-19 lead.
In the fourth quarter Saint John drove all the way to the Halifax 10 yard line where a field goal attempt was blocked. On the last play of the game Richard Naves hit Jeff Thomas on a long pass to the Halifax 7 yard line. Unfortunately for the Wanderers time had expired and the Subways were the Maritime Bowl Champions.

New Brunswick Semi-Final

Capital Area Gladiators 21 Moncton Marshals 7

The Moncton Marshals came into this game looking for their first win of the season. They came within 7 minutes of achieving their goal.
After a scoreless first quarter Capital Area went ahead when Allison Brooks hooked up with Alex Paul on a 25 yard touchdown pass. The convert was no good.
Moncton responded with a time consuming drive from their own 35 yard line all the way to the Gladiator 10 yard line only to have Jon Roscoe intercept the ball in the end zone. Capital Area threw its own interception and this time Marshal QB Ian Beardsworth found Clayton Powers in the end zone for the major. Capital Area fumbled the kickoff return and gave the ball back to Moncton. The Gladiator defence held and Moncton settled for a Gregg Smith single to put them ahead 7-6 at halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter the Gladiators got the break they need when Roscoe intercepted a Marshals pass and returned it to the Moncton 25. From here the Gladiators drove to the one yard line where Rob Barrett swept in for the touchdown. A two point conversion attempt failed leaving Capital Area ahead 12-7 with seven minutes to go in the game.
Moncton was unable to move the ball on its next series and had to punt. The snap went over the  punters head for a safety giving  the Gladiators a 14-7 lead. Capital Area elected to scrimmage from its 35 yard line and mounted a drive in the dying minutes that finished with Allison Brooks connecting on a 5 yard touchdown pass to Jon Lister. Danny Gibson added the convert to make the final score 21-7 for the Gladiators.

These two teams last played one another in 1962. The Wanderers won that game and the rematch 40 years later. Saint John took the opening kickoff and used a mix of runs and short passes to march the length of the field. The drive culminated in a 20 yard touchdown pass from Richard Naves to Jeff Thomas. Todd White added the convert.
The Wanderers stretched their lead to 14-0 in the second quarter when Naves and Thomas combined on a 70 yard pass and run play. White was again good on the convert. A missed field goal raised the score to 15-0. The Buccaneers answered back just before halftime when quarterback Matt Elliott found the end zone on a 5 yard run.
After a scoreless third quarter the Wanderers drove to the Halifax 5 yard mainly due to a 35 yard ramble by 240 pound fullback Chris Johnson. From here Naves found Doug McPhee in the end zone for the major and White successfully added the convert to put the Wanderers up 22-7.
With a little more than a minute remaining in the game Jason Warren of the Buccaneers broke loose on a 40 yard pass play to narrow the score to 22-14. The Bucs' attempt at a short kickoff went out of bounds. The Wanderers were able to run out the clock and preserve the victory.

June 29                                   Halifax Subways 13 Moncton Marshals 0

In a game between two very evenly matched teams it was the Subways who were able to capitalize on Moncton mistakes. After a scoreless first quarter Halifax opened the scoring when a booming punt gave them a 1-0 lead.
On the subsequent series the Subways picked off a Marshals pass deep in the Moncton end. Quarterback Trevor Slaunwhite wasted little time hitting Junior LeBlanc with a 15 yard touchdown pass.
In the third quarter the Marshals had apparently stopped a Subways drive by intercepting a pass. This play was wiped out by a roughing the passer penalty giving Halifax a first down deep in Moncton territory. Rodney Fraser would cap this drive with a 10 yard touchdown run.
The Marshals had some success on offencel but had trouble consistently moving the ball. Late in the second and fourth quarters they were able to move deep into the Halifax end but were unable to find the end zone before time had expired.

The showdown for first place did not disappoint. The Gladiators opened the scoring with a 50 yard drive that culminated in 10 yard touchdown pass by Tyler Hooper to Jeff Taylor. Danny Gibson added the convert.
Saint John struck back twice in the second quarter with Richard Naves hitting Jeff Thomas twice on two long touchdown passes to give the Wanderers a 12-7 lead. With time winding down in the first half Gladiator linebacker Danny Gibson picked off a Naves pass at mid field and returned it all the way to the Wanderers 5 yard line. The Saint John defence would come up with a goal line  stand to keep the Gladiators from scoring.
In the third quarter a Gladiator fumble gave the Wanderers the ball on the Capital Area 5 yard line. The Gladiators defence rose to the occasion and kept Saint John out of the end zone, only to have its offence fumble on the first play and give the ball back to the Wanderers. This time Kevin Muise would bang in from the 1 yard line for six points. Richard Naves found Doug McPhee for the two point conversion putting Saint John ahead 20-7.
Gladiator quarterback Allison Brooks was quick to respond hitting Jeff Taylor on a 40 yard touchdown pass on the next series. Gibson added the convert to narrow the score to 20-14 at the end of the third quarter.
Another Gladiator fumble put Saint John in possession deep in Capital Area territory. The Wanderers drove down to the Gladiator 1 yard line but the Capital Area defence came up with its second goal line stand of the game to get the ball back for its offence. On the first play from scrimmage another Gladiator fumble resulted in a safety touch that put the Wanderers up 22-14. On the day Capital Area fumbled the ball six times.
With less than a minute left in the game the Gladiators mounted a desperate drive from deep in their own end. Brooks hit Mark Huys with two long passes and then found Jeff Taylor at the Saint John 1 yard line. On the next play Brooks plunged in for the touchdown to narrow the score to 22-20. A pass attempt for the equalizing 2 point conversion was incomplete.
The Wanderers would recover the Gladiators attempted short kick off and were able to kneel twice to run out the clock and preserve the win.

Week 1- June 22-23

June 22                                   Capital Area Gladiators  15  Halifax Buccaneers 6

The very first game of the newly formed Maritime Senior Football Union featured a contest between the defending New Brunswick champion Capital Area Gladiators and the three time defending Nova Scotia champion Halifax Buccaneers. Played on the artificial turf of Huskies Stadium in Halifax this game featured two very evenly matched teams in a hard hitting and cleanly played game featuring tough defence.
The Gladiators dominated the first quarter. They hemmed the Bucs in their own end but were unable to score. Early in the second quarter Capital Area quarterback Allison Brooks found Jeff Taylor on the Halifax 20 yard line. Taylor made the catch and then outran two defenders to the end zone. Danny Gibson added the convert. Later in the quarter, aided by a long punt return, Halifax marched to the Gladiators 10 yard line. However the defence stiffened and the Bucs had to settle for a field goal. Halftime score was 7-3 for the Gladiators.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Buccaneers threatened again when a long pass play put the ball on the Gladiator 10 yard line. However, once again the Capital Area defence would not yield and the Halifax had to settle for another field goal to make the score 7-6.
Capital Area would respond by driving to the Halifax 20 yard line where Danny Gibson's 30 yard field goal was wide resulting in a single point and an 8-6 Gladiator lead.
With less than three minutes to go in the game Brooks and Taylor hooked up again from 35 yards out on a beautiful down out and down pass play that got Taylor into the end zone again. Gibson added the convert to put the Gladiators up 15-6 and close out the scoring.
During the final minute of play Halifax gambled and turned the ball over on downs deep in their own end. The Gladiators quickly drove to the Halifax ten yard line. Rather than attempt to score again the visitors took two knees and ran out the clock. This display of good sportsmanship augers well for the future of the Maritime Senior Football Union.
It was a game dominated by defences. The Halifax defensive line had Gladiator quarterback Allison Brooks on the run the whole afternoon, sacking him six times. Neither team was able to move the ball effectively on the ground so both offences went to the passing game. The Capital Area secondary responded by making six interceptions.

The Marshals opened the scoring early in the first quarter thanks to a Saint John fumble on its first play from scrimmage following the opening kickoff. Moncton drove to the Wanderers five yard line but had to settle for a field goal by Greg Smith.
Later in the first quarter 40 yard scamper by Kevin Muise set the Wanderers up on the Marshals five yard line. Three plays later Muise banged in from the one to give Saint John a 6-3 lead.
The second and third quarters were dominated by defence. Neither team's offence could string together more than a couple of first downs without being forced to punt.
With less than seven minutes remaining in the game Saint John drove the ball down to the Moncton five yard line but could not punch in for the score. The Marshals were unable to move the ball and were forced to punt. The kick was off the side of the punters foot leaving the Wanderers on the Moncton 15 yard line. This time Saint John would capitalize when Quarterback Richard Naves hit Doug McPhee on a 10 yard touchdown pass.
In the last minute of the game a scrambling Naves found Jon Haines on a 52 yard pass and run play for the game's final score.  Todd White would add the convert to bring the final score to 19-3 for Saint John.

Burchill Trophy Game

Capital Area Gladiators 9  Saint John Wanderers 1

The Gladiators and Wanderers hooked up in a classic battle between two unyielding defences. Neither team's offence could sustain a drive. At halftime the two teams were locked in a scoreless stalemate.
By the third quarter the wind had picked up to the point where it became a factor in the game. Reese Roche's 60 yard punt bounced out the back of the Gladiators' end zone giving the Wanderers a single point and what appeared to be enough points for a victory.
In the fourth quarter the Gladiators, with the wind at their back, began to push Saint John back into their own end. Finally, with less than 5 minutes remaining in the game, Gladiator quarterback Allison Brooks hooked up with Andrew Fisher on 40 yard touchdown pass. Jeff Taylor added the 2 point conversion. Capital Area added a single by Dave Pepin and the defence did the rest as the Gladiators laid claim to the Burchill Trophy.
